The Cost of Owning and Caring a Rosehall German Shepherd Puppy

Key Takeaways:

  •            A well-bred German Shepherd puppy usually costs $1,500 and up to generally around $3,000.
  •            Depending on several factors, costs can exceed $4,000, especially if they have established or desirable bloodlines or have had any training.
  •            The GSDs we breed are known for their versatility and intelligence and are family-friendly.
  •      Several factors go into the pricing of a German shepherd dog. These dogs originated in Germany and were bred for herding purposes. The average lifespan of a GSD ranges       from 9 to 12 years, though many have lived into their mid-teens.

We carefully breed large, straight-back German shepherd dogs that are family-friendly. While the average weight for standard male shepherds is 75 to 80 pounds and 65 to 70 pounds for females, our males are usually over 100 pounds, and our females average from 80 to 100 pounds. Puppies will be in these ranges, but each puppy will have some variation in its adult weight.

Factors That Determine the Cost of a German Shepherd Dog

Some of the factors that go into the pricing of a German Shepherd dog include:

  •       Breeder Reputation: Breeders who have been breeding for over 10 years and have a history of healthy, well-tempered dogs may charge more as they prioritize ethical breeding practices and health screenings.
  •       Lineage and Bloodlines: GSDs from established lineage may cost significantly more due to their pedigree and potential to work in jobs such as law enforcement, herding and service dogs. They may also be bred for Schutzhund and other working-dog competitions and shows, including tracking, agility and scent work.
  •             Coat Color: Depending on breeding quality, certain coats, such as black, white, panda or liver, may command higher prices.
  •       Age: Puppies are generally more expensive than adults and senior dogs, unless the adult has training.
  •       Location: German shepherd dog prices vary based on location and the availability of breeders in your area.

What is the Initial Expense for a German Shepherd Puppy?

You will have more expenses than the purchase price of a well-bred German shepherd puppy. Some of the costs you should be able to cover immediately or prior to picking up your puppy include:

  •       Supplies: Collar, leash, harness, food bowls, water bowls, crate, dog toys, bedding and food. Depending on where you live in the country, these items could run you several hundred dollars for quality items and food. Keep in mind that most shepherds are very playful and become power chewers, so high-quality items will last longer.
  •       Microchipping: We highly recommend that you microchip your puppy at its first vet visit. A veterinarian implants the microchip, which has a unique identification number tied to your contact information. Shelters and vets can scan the chip if your dog ever gets lost. Microchipping generally costs $50 and up.
  •       Vaccinations: You only need to give your puppy the core vaccinations that are essential for health protection. These include distemper, parvovirus and rabies. It is your responsibility to research the various vaccines available and the effects they may have on your dog. Vaccines can cost up to several hundred dollars by the time you finish the puppy boosters. We do not recommend giving your dog the Lepto4 vaccine unless the benefits outweigh the danger of your GSD developing seizures and / or cancer from the vaccine. You must do your research on the Lepto4 vaccine to determine whether you are better off with or without it. We cannot make this decision for you.
  •       Licensing: These fees vary by your location but generally cost from $10 to $20.
  •       Travel: You will have travel costs to pick up your puppy from Rosehall Shepherds in Sparta, Tennessee or to ship your puppy. Travel costs depend on the cost of fuel for your trip, hotels, meals, airline costs, and other factors that apply to your situation.
